Al Qathafi Addresses Crowd in Tripoli

A few hours before the United Nations Security Council was to meet in Geneva to discuss the situation in Libya with sanctions the possible imposition, Friday, the Libyan leader, Muammar Al Qathafi addressed a crowd of supporters at the Green Square in Tripoli, telling them: “We can defeat any aggression if necessary and arm the people”.

During his address, that was also transmitted on state television, he said: “I am in the middle of the people.. we will fight … we will defeat them if they want … we will defeat any foreign aggression. Dance … sing and get ready … this is the spirit … this is much better than the lies of the Arab propaganda”.

Standing, and waving his fist, showing his defiance and in a bid to rally the young people against what he calls foreign interference, he said he would arm people against protsters. He also referred to Libya's war of independence with Italy.

Al Qathafi's speech came on a day when Libyans again took to the streets in different parts of the country, including the Libyan capital, Tripoli, calling for an end to his rule.

In the meantime, Libyan state television also aired a sermon warning th congregation in Tripoli as to their behaviour. The Imam said: “As the Prophet said, if you dislike your ruler or his behaviour, you should not raise your sword against him, but be patient, for those who disobey the rulers will die as infidels".

Al Jazeera’s Laurence Lee reported that Friday prayer in Benghazi saw thousands and thousands on the streets waving banners with a message to the capital, saying: “We're with you, Tripoli.”
